An email from an ex-gikian visiting NUST .

Its EMAIL time again! These past few days have kept me gelled to my inbox which, by the way, I rarely opened in my university time . I must admit I am getting "obsessed" with emails these days. Side-effects of joblessness ? Maybe...

Its been a long time since I engaged in the never-ending childish debate of the "BEST UNIVERSITY" of Pakistan. But after so many years, does anyone really "still" care out there about this?

The answer to that is apparently yes! We have over here an email forwarded to me by a friend (ex-Gikian) and written by a proud, proud gikian.

Subject: [alumni] THE BEST UNIVERSITY OF PAKISTAN.

Friends,

Today I had the oppurtunity to visit NUST open house on behalf of my company where I was advised to hire an intern for our deparment. Over the past few years, I have heard rumblings to the fact that how NUST has overtaken and left giki far far behind. So here is the story of today.

I reached NUST with the images of grand function and grand project I must confess that i was really really afraid that open house would be something amazin.

However to my initial relief, open house was being held in a "tambo", As i tried to enter the tambo open house and i was promptly asked to remove my behind from there as the arena was not "officially" opened by the Chief Guest and I was promptly shipped to another "tambo" where chief guest was being received. Made to sit there for about 20 minutes the chief guest finally arrived. Everyone stood up and rushed to receive the "Chief Guest". Then the Dean in his welcome speech went on and on about how his 'hollyness' the chief guest had graced the occasion by coming. Bored by all what I called "School Standard Parents Day speech by the Principal" , I decided to go out for a Cigarette.

As i stood there having my cigarette, finally happy that i was away from the nauseating buttering of the chief guest, i was accosted by a sombre looking person and was asked in these exact words and slightly rudely.

Person: "App Kaun hai "

Me: "Ji mein BHP Petroleum se aya ho for open house

Person: "Acha Acha. Pur baat yeah ke app under ja ke bethay"

Me: Cigg pe kar jata ho

Person: Nahin App abhi jai

Slightly embarassed and little angry, I was shipped once again to the tambo. Well, after listening to about 30 minutes of ********* (censored) from the Dean and then the Chief Guest we were finally allowed to enter the "tambo" where supposedly the projects of the open house were being displayed.

Well to my amazement only two stalls were allocated to final year projects while the rest of the space was taken up by NWO, NESPAK, NLC, GUNJ GLASS, etc etc. I decided to go ahead and talk to the student with final year projects, as my objective was to hire an internee for this year. While I was standing on one of the two stalls allocated to the students, I was once again accosted by another somber looking person and was told in these words.

Person: "App Zara yaha se hut jai kyu ke chief guest ab is stall pur ana walay hai"

Extremely pissed i decided to give this person piece of my mind . After which I left the tambo open house and nust altogether and came back without hiring the internee.

Now you all must be thinking who this VVIP chief guest was so here is the last kicker. He was the Rector of NUST.

So u can guess which is still the best uni in pak and what is over hyped military *********.[censored]

And there we have it ! After eons and eons of futile bragging , we still cant get over the euphoria about studying in GIKI, NUST etc. In reality, a great school is that that helps you learn, really learn, something constructive irrespective of the hype . Plus it "may" help you find a job as well!

This email, however, has some valid points and some exaggerations. I have always talked and written about how NUST events lack the glitter, opulence and marketing which is required by a leading University. Perhaps that is something NUST can learn from LUMS, but seriously not Giki. Its also a reminder to how we should treat people from the industry when ever we arrange an open-house. This guy perhaps visited EME and not H-12 which is a bit more friendly to civilians.

However we also have an email from a very energetic Nustian who replied:

"Nothing is wrong with NUST. Its just that Mr. Shah Hussain was having a very bad day!
And we should not promote/support propaganda against NUST as this guy has done by posting it on the yahoo group (giki-alumni@yahoogroups.com).Every university has certain problems and short comings, and we are still the number one university of Pakistan. Mr. Hussain should approach PEC/HEC, if he thinks the rankings are wrong.Proud to be a NUSTian." Ahmad Mustafa .

Ahmad bhai, its always good to highlight your weaknesses and improve them and not sit in a fool's paradise. But I agree no one is perfect, not even us.

And I request all to take this email as satire and not an invitation for a brawl ;)

Wasalaam

Usman

  3. LOL at "Nothing is wrong with NUST. Its just that Mr. Shah Hussain was having a very bad day!" =D

Nust is definitely the best uni but certainly not perfect. Best and perfect are not synonyms right?!

P.S. Being a student of EME, I assure you that no such event occured at our college recently.
(The letter is dated 30th November and the writer visited it the same day "Today i had the opportunity to visit...")

  5. This is nothing but open resentment on the part of this ex Gikian against the best university of Pakistan. Who is he to judge a university in a few hours?
Plus if he can't handle adhering to the rules of an institution he should probably try staying out of it in the first place. I'n not saying NUST is perfect but this guy here has some serious issues.
And btw it is the military leadership who elicit all those heavy funds which are keeping this university going. I'd like to see this university being run by some other administration. The truth is there is no other administration capable enough of running this university as it is being run currently. But we being Pakistanis display the one characteristic we seem really reluctant of letting go of - thanklessness.

    1. GIKI is an "INSTITUTE".NOT a university.so why would it be in qs univ. rankings? Pea Brain! AND GIKI is MONO discipline i.e not considered for rankings since it only focuses on engineering.

  7. But still....We should improve our standards!

  9. SCEE open house was good and informative... Mr. Shah has bad day.
Mostly stalls were of GIS/RS based organizations and it was good opportunity for student who dnt know about GIS. No doubt there was some flaws but overall this was good event.

  10. A NUSTian but still agree with this guy !

  11. Mr. Shah is wrong, protocol system is nt only in NUST. Just on this base u cant declair a university good or bad... He should be mature and professional minded, as He said, he came to hire an internee but back without it. why??? just because he dnt like opening ceremony??He should nt take the event personally but fulfill his duty/purpose for which he came here.

  12. I happen to have heard this qissa, about telling the guy to leave because the chief guest was about to arrive to that stall from people who were standing on that stall. it happened to be the NICE principal who said that! =S
which seriosuly means that we at NUST need to set our priorities. do we want to market our students or just please chief guests! hopefully, the next Open House would take such things into account.
as far as the guy is concerned, obviously the company wont shut down just because they couldnt have an intern from NUST. so he could do anything. nuqsaan apna hai.

  13. indeed I agree ..... at the end of the day ...we do need jobs ...:(

  14. open house was indeed very informative...
but it must also include the parties of prospective employers who can take freshmen after their selection process as people studying at NUST on the expenses of those companies.
this would indeed help a large group of desirous students.
As this thing is practised in GIKI...

  15. well the point here is not that what happens to yhe Mr.Employer. The point is that there were only two stalls there by the final year students. And overall it wasn't a very successful open-house SCEE must admit that. Besides all these why are we defending NUST if its the best no need to defend and if not the best nothing there to defend.
What i found is that SCEE - open house is criticised a lot so definitely there is something fishy about it. Open house was nice but not good and in no way a best.
    STAYYY COOOLLLLLLLLLL!!!!

  19. usman bhai its me taimur again.thanks 4 ur kind assistance. actually a year or two before i was hearing nust to be the topper univ nd each and evry body desired to get admitted to it including me. now i m going to complete my college era nd obviosly its da time to make a choice.although i donot consider myself so competent to get admitted to nust but one should hope better.as i have stated above dat its da time 2 make a decision nd frankly speaking i need ur kind assistance in this regard dat which univ at da present time is building da career of professional students in a right way .although i know dat every inst has some shortcomings but comparatively which is da best according to urs hon'ble point of view nd y?

  20. Dear Taimur ,

I know a lot of people literally cry just to get into NUST. The truth is, its not worth it . They are a lot of people who do get in on the edge, but they than get relegated and withdrawn. These are very commoon practices of NUST. I suggest you choose FAST or COMSATS . Have a look at their curriculum. The curriculum is the primary thing you must take notice of. Unfortunately our curriculum needs more thought. I my self prefer the field of IT as they are a lot ofjobs being created due to outsourcing. But at the end it depends how many contacts you have and where do you have them. Choose a field after which you can easily get a job...!

Any future questions are most welcome but I would prefer we have this discussion on the fanpage.... so that others can also read it...

  21. its taimur.thnx usman bhai for anwering me . according to ur kind opinion nust is not that worth which students think it to be .but when we browse the ranking of nust on world level than there it stands the only uni of pakistan at 300th position.why is dat so?nd whats da criteria of a univ ranking on international level?

    ReplyDelete
  22. indeed that is a good question . I dont know if you know, but university of lahore is also in the top 500 yet Im sure you have not heard of it. Unfortunately I believe the rankings are not trustworthy. HAving said that its not that NUST is a bad uni by paki standards. Its a good uni by paki standards but not as good as the hype that is generated with it. Rankings have different criteria but they are highly unreliable.

Great Universities help societies improve. They are the beacon of hope for their societies. You talk about harvard etc and you will know that they have contributed in creating great companies.Same can never be said of Paki unis in general and Nust in particular.
Bottom line : Nust is good but not great.

  23. usman bhai its taimur again thanking u .i h've heard a lot of stuff about uet lahore .for example students studying there always say dat they r given much practical work rather than theory nd also dat the teaching staff is nt only well behaved but also full of knowledge as they try their best to convince da students.then whats ur opinion about uet lahore?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I have heard some pretty bad stuff about UET as well. The best university right now accroding to me is SSE LUMS/\. It will be a wonderful experience for you I am sure of that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. from taimur:- thanks again 4 answering me.but if i m not wrong than lums is for mba nd my aim is engineering nd it has not yet been introduced in lums!

    ReplyDelete
  26. There is SSE at LUMS which is a school of science and engineering. Its been quite some while since that happened.

    ReplyDelete
  27. from taimur:-thnx usman bhai but da fact is dat ,unluckily the test 4 sse has already been taken on 14th feb.nd now there is no chance 4 me to apply to it.is there any alternative or , to which we normally say the 2nd option regarding univ.

  28. thank u a lot usman bhai for ur kind assistance.u have cleared my brain which enabled me to make the right choice .may god bless u a lot.if i come across any difficulty regarding this subject in future ,i will ask u about it.again thanking u.from taimur.
